On August 31, the Korea Communications Commission (KCC, Chairman Lee Hyo-seong) and the Korea Administration for ICT Promotion (KAIT) carried out an "On-site Communications Training" at the Welfare Center in Ulleung-gun for marginalized groups from island areas. The "On-site Communications Training" program aims to reduce the smart technology gap for marginalized groups such as the disabled and multicultural families. The program teaches participants how to utilize the silver mobile phone plan for the elderly and provides information on mobile phone plan discounts or exemptions and international calls. It also informs participants on how to protect themselves from voice phishing, pharming and other scams. Of the target number of 38,000 people for 2017, so far 28,000 people have participated. This day, 25 participants from marginalized groups residing in Ulleung-gun, including the disabled and farming/fishing communities, received customized training on how to use communications services safely; for example they were taught what to check when registering, using, and canceling communications services and how to avoid scams like voice phishing. Additionally, customized materials were distributed to those who could not attend the training, and participants shared their complaints about and suggestions for communications services. A KCC official commented, "we will continue to expand the On-site Communications Training for island communities, the disabled and other marginalized groups so that all Koreans everywhere can easily use broadcasting and telecommunications services." |
