Samsung Electronics smartphones will feature a malicious message-blocking function.
The Korea Communications Commission (KCC, Chairperson Lee Jinsook) announced on the 25th that an “AI-based malicious message blocking feature” has been developed in collaboration with the Korea Internet and Security Agency (KISA) and Samsung Electronics.
The development is part of the government-wide “Comprehensive Spam Message Prevention Measures” announced last November, aiming to prevent various types of harm caused by malicious messages related to unlawful loans, adult content, and gambling.
The feature is based on AI technology that automatically blocks messages suspected to be malicious on smartphones. Spam messages containing suspected spam phone numbers and malicious URLs are automatically sorted into a spam message box.
Samsung Electronics will first apply the feature to its latest Galaxy smartphone devices (S25 series) and gradually apply it to other existing devices through the Android 15 (One UI 7) update.
The KCC, KISA, and Samsung Electronics have been developing this feature since September last year. Users can selectively unblock or check automatically blocked messages in the “Blocked Malicious Message Box,” “AI-blocked Message Box,” and “User-blocked Message Box” as needed.
Director General of the KCC Consumer Policy Bureau Shin Young-kyu said, “Spam prevention measures have been strengthened with the introduction of Samsung Electronics’ new feature in addition to mobile carriers’ spam-blocking activities.” He added, “We will continue working to create an environment where people can feel safe from harm caused by spam messages, phishing, and smishing through close cooperation.”
