Preventing excessive overlap in Olympic broadcasts and enhancing viewer choice The Korea Communications Commission (KCC, Chairman Kim Hong-il) has recommended that the three terrestrial broadcasters (KBS, MBC, and SBS) implement orderly program relay broadcasting for the 2024 Paris Olympics from July 26 to August 11, 2024, avoiding excessive overlap of specific sports events. This recommendation aims to prevent the infringement of viewers' watching and listening rights by ensuring that the relay broadcasters schedule programs orderly across different channels and media. However, exceptions will be made for events with high public interest, such as the opening and closing ceremonies and finals involving the Korean national team. KCC also urged the broadcasters to pre-coordinate effectively to ensure the successful implementation of this orderly program relay broadcasting. The recommendation for orderly program relay broadcasting of the Paris Olympics is based on Article 76-5 of the Broadcasting Act and was decided after consultations with the broadcasters and deliberations by the General Viewing and Listening Right Guarantee Committee of the KCC. The Committee emphasized the necessity of this approach to ensure the extension of broadcasting time for less popular sports and the viewer's right to watch various events. The KCC has conveyed the recommendation to the broadcasters which hold the right to relay broadcasting for the Paris Olympics?Korean Broadcasting System (KBS), Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation (MBC), and Seoul Broadcasting System (SBS)?urging them to make sure to diligently protect viewers' rights. ### The Korea Communications Commission |
