Date 2009-05-19 Read 9491
Korea Communications Commission(KCC) (Chairman See-Joong Choi) announced that Norway's terrestrial DMB(Korean standard of Mobile WiMax, Digital Multimedia Broadcasting) service provider NMTV (Norway Mobile TV) started providing terrestrial DMB broadcasting service in the capital city of Oslo on the 15th.

Norway's national broadcaster NRK and private broadcaster TV2 and MTG established NMTV with the aim to commercialize terrestrial DMB. In November last year, President Gunnar Garfors of NMTV visited Korea to deliberate with Byeong Gi Lee, Standing Commissioner of KCC on receiving consultation and support for terrestrial DMB broadcasting.

Following the high popularity of free mobile broadcasting worldwide, Norway's terrestrial DMB broadcasting service will include 6 movie channels and 15 audio channels free-of-charge with plans to expand up to 9 video channels and add a fee to some channels to take the project to a profit-generating model.

Meanwhile, the terrestrial DMB broadcasting inauguration ceremony on the 15th will be attended by various representatives of Norway's broadcasters and mobile communications and those from broadcasters of the Netherlands and the Czech Republic, who are considering starting terrestrial DMB. In Korea, private and government institutes will join efforts to form a group of representatives who will introduce the current situation of DMB service in Korea and deliberate with local companies on providing equipments and terminals.

KCC sees Norway's terrestrial DMB broadcasting as a new turning point for the expansion of terrestrial DMB across Europe. Apart from Norway, the main broadcasters of other European countries such as Italy, the Netherlands and France are also actively reviewing the prospects of commercializing terrestrial DMB.
