The Korea Communications Commission (KCC, chairman Lee Dong-kwan) and the Korea Information Society Development Institute (President Bae Kyoung Yul) hold the fifth International Conference on Ethics of the Intelligent Information Society at the Seoul Post Tower on Friday afternoon, December 1.

The event, which has been held since 2019 and marks its fifth anniversary this year, has been discussing ethical issues and governance-related issues of new technologies, such as virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), artificial intelligence, and metaverse, with domestic and foreign experts in line with rapid changes in the intelligent information society.

This year's conference, under the theme of "Generative AI and Humans," discusses the cooperation and conflict between generative AI and humans, which have become a burning topic in our society due to the emergence of ChatGPT.

The conference consists of a total of three sessions.

The first session centers on academia. Professor S. Shyam Sundar of Pennsylvania State University gives a keynote speech on ways to build trust based on social responsibility under the theme of Generative AI and Human Psychology: Path Toward Socially Responsible Trust, and Professor Sung Yong-jun (Korea University) gives a presentation on trust and privacy for AI technology under the theme of The Era of AI: Trust and Privacy for a Sustainable AI Technology.

In the second session, Mike Yeh, Regional Vice President of Microsoft, presents ethical and sustainable artificial intelligence under the theme of The Challenges and Opportunities of Generative AI: Framework and Practices for Responsible and Sustainable AI, followed by Lee Hwa-ran, a leader of Naver Cloud, on the theme of Responsible AI.

In the final session, experts at home and abroad have a panel discussion under the theme of Generative AI and humans. Professor Lee Joon-hwan of Seoul National University serves as a moderator, and the presenters, Professor Lee Sang-wook of Hanyang University, Professor Choi Jae-sik of KAIST, Associate Research Fellow Lee Hyun-kyong of KISDI, and General Manager Han Seok-hyun of YMCA participate in the discussion.

Vice Chairman Lee Sang-in said in his opening remark, "While generative AI technology provides new possibilities and opportunities for overall our society, concerns over the misuse of AI, such as IP infringement, algorithmic bias, and fake news, are also great." He also added, "The KCC will come up with a related system so that the principles that our society pursues as community values, such as public safety, human rights protection, and democratic decision-making, can be preserved in AI services as well without hindering the development of the AI industry."
