HOUSEHOLDS AFFECTED BY WILDFIRES IN SPECIAL DISASTER ZONES CAN CANCEL INTERNET SERVICES WITHOUT PENALTIES
Temporary suspension period to be expanded.
An emergency meeting and internet service status reviews were conducted with the three major telecom companies.
The Korea Communications Commission (KCC, Chairperson Lee Jinsook) announced on the 2nd that it held an emergency meeting on the 1st with the three major mobile carriers?KT, LGU+, and SK Broadband?to review the response and user complaints on high-speed internet in the special disaster zones affected by wildfires.
The KCC asked the mobile carriers to inform affected households that they can cancel their high-speed internet service plans without cancellation charges in accordance with the terms and conditions, and requested to simplify the application process for cancellation.
In particular, the KCC asked for a dedicated hotline for each mobile carrier for convenient consultation, considering the large number of elderly people in the affected areas.
The dedicated hotlines are: KT 080-722-0100, LGU+ 080-864-1010, and SK Broadband (including SK Telecom) 080-825-0106. The KCC will operate the Online Harm 365 Center (142-235) starting at 9 a.m., on April 3rd.
The KCC requested to expand the temporary suspension period for services to a maximum of one year for the affected households in the special disaster zones. Additionally, the fee waiver policy, which mobile carriers have been voluntarily implementing in part, will now be reflected in their terms and conditions and fully implemented at the request of the KCC, if internet service is not accessible due to loss, destruction, or partial destruction of residential facilities in the special disaster zones.
The mobile carriers will swiftly reflect the improvement requests of the KCC and provide users who make inquiries in the wildfire special disaster zones with relevant procedures.
Chairperson Lee Jinsook stated, “The KCC hopes to minimize inconveniences for the people who are in difficulties caused by massive wildfires with the measures, especially the challenges that elderly people in the disaster areas may face when canceling their services.” She added, “The KCC will continue to proactively look after and swiftly improve user inconveniences in the broadcasting and communications service field.”
