 The "Guardian" syndrome will be repeated as the Korea-Canada audiovisual coproduction agreement is going to bring to fruition. The drama, Guardian was set in Canada, a country known for beautiful autumn leaves, and gained a lot of popularity. Vice Chairman Lee Sang-in of the Korea Communications Commission (KCC, Chairman Kim Hong-il) had a meeting with Parliamentary Secretary Taleeb Noormohamed to the Minister of the Department of Canadian Heritage at Rosetta Hall at the Canada Embassy to Korea on Wednesday, April 24. They pledged to closely cooperate on coproduction and confirmed their willingness to conclude the agreement within the year, which is currently in its final stages. The coproduction agreement has the same legal effect as domestic law, enabling the joint production of broadcasting programs with the partner state and granting benefits outlined in the agreement. A broadcasting program produced according to the agreement conditions is recognized as domestic production, being exempted from overseas programming quota and other regulations. In addition, benefits include seamless entry and exit of shooting equipment and producing staff. The KCC already concluded coproduction agreements with 38 states worldwide, including the EU, India, and the UK, and it is now working on negotiations with Canada, China, Turkiye, and Thailand to expand counterpart states. The commission also improves the effect of the agreement and supports Korea's broadcasting content to expand into the world market by granting coproduction costs to domestic broadcasters through open contests every year. Mr. Noormohamed visited Korea as part of the Team Canada Trade Mission* and emphasized that the Korea-Canada audiovisual coproduction agreement is a top priority to facilitate coproduction with Korea. *The TCTM is a public-private joint team consisting of Canadian government organizations and enterprises and visited Japan in October 2023 and Vietnam and Malaysia in March 2024 to strengthen cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region. Vice Chairman Lee said, "This agreement will allow benefits and supports at a state level, even though there are various coproductions going on in the private sector." "We will proactively support more coproductions to be produced through the agreement," he added. Meanwhile, the KCC has negotiated with the Department of Canadian Heritage on the Korea-Canada audiovisual coproduction agreement since 2017 and completed initialing last December after the final agreement with Canada. Currently, the agreement is under the review of the Ministry of Government Legislation and is expected to be signed and promulgated this year. ### The Korea Communications Commission |
