An international conference on media literacy will be held. This conference is the first of its kind in Korea, as it is themed around the use of media by children.
The Korea Communications Commission (KCC, Acting Chairperson Kim Tae-kyu) and the Community Media Foundation (CMF, Chairman Choi Cheol-ho) announced that they will host the ‘2024 International Conference on Media Literacy’ on Monday, October 21 with the theme of ‘Exploring Children’s Media Experiences in the Digital Media Age: Exploring Children’s Media Experiences in the Digital Media Age.’
This conference aims to analyze the digital media experiences of Generation Alpha, who were born and raised in an environment where digital media and artificial intelligence is prevalent. In addition, it will delve into policy directions. Generation Alpha refers to those who were born after 2010, for whom smartphones and digital media are the norm.
Due to digital transformation and the non-contact culture resulting from COVID-19, digital media has become central to reshaping play and learning for children. Consequently, the age at which children are exposed to media is becoming younger, and the frequency of media usage is increasing. This trend is observed worldwide, including in Korea.
The conference will involve experts who have studied the use of digital media, education, and development for children in Korea, the US, Australia, and Europe. Its aim is to share research findings on the use of media in relation to games, plays, learning, and communication, while also presenting solutions to create a digital media landscape that reflects the perspectives of children.
“It is timely to discuss the impacts that digital media has on children and the resulting countermeasures, as the influence of digital media has grown in daily lives and the number of hours that children use media in Korea has exceeded three hours per day,” said Kim Tae-kyu, the acting chairperson. “The KCC will be committed in fostering an environment that allows all generations to utilize digital media safely and properly.”
This conference will be held in Conference Room S402 at COEX, Seoul from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM on Monday October 21. It is scheduled to be live-streamed via the ‘MediOn Youtube Channel.’ More information is available on the official conference homepage at 2024mediaweek.co.kr.
In the meantime, the conference is part of the ‘2024 Media Literacy Week,’ with various programs scheduled at 12 centers of the CMF across the nation from October 21 to October 26. The programs include award ceremonies for the competition of the best media education cases, achievement-sharing meetings, seminars, and workshops.
