Hosting a second round of meeting for the Public-Private Council for the Protection of AI Service Users
The Korea Communications Commission (KCC, Acting Chairperson Kim Tae-kyu) and the Korea Information Society Development Institute (KISDI, Acting President Jeong-Eon KIM) hosted a second round of meeting for the Public-Private Council for the Protection of AI Service Users (‘Public-Private Council,’ chaired by Professor Won-Woo Lee, Seoul National University School of Law) on Friday, November 15.
Kang Jeong-soo, Head of the ‘Bluedot AI’ Research Center, presented measures to strike a balance between innovation and user protection, under the theme ‘User Protection in the Era of AI Agent.’ which is one of the major Artificial Intelligence (AI) services of the future. Kang discussed broadly the standards for user protection and the roles that the KCC should play, which need to be considered amid AI technological advancements.
In the meantime, the KCC launched the ‘Public-Private Council for the Protection of AI Service Users’ on July 19, comprising AI experts from academia, industry, and civic organizations, in an effort to proactively respond to user protection issues arising from AI technological advancements. In addition to the launch, the KCC discussed the current status of domestic AI regulations, including the enactment of the ‘Act on User Protection for AI Services’ which the KCC is seeking, as well as institutional measures to implement it.
“It is necessary to establish policies that strike a balance between user safety and rights and the development of industries amid rapidly evolving AI landscape,” stressed Shin Young-kyu, Director-General of the Consumer Policy Bureau of the KCC. “The KCC looks forward to seeing the measures suggested during the Public-Private Council meeting serve as important references for developing AI policies moving forward.”
