On January 10, Lee Hyo-seong, chairman of the Korea Communications Commission (KCC) met with Kevin Martin, executive vice president of Facebook, and exchanged opinions on the ways to solve reverse discrimination between global corporations and domestic companies, protect users and develop the domestic internet ecosystem. In the meeting, KCC Chairman Lee welcomed Facebook’s recent decision to report sales per country and pay taxes in relation to controversy over tax avoidance. In this regard, Chairman Lee asked for measures to address the issue of reverse discrimination against domestic, which had been pointed out repeatedly by the National Assembly and the media. He suggested that a network fee corresponding to traffic usage fee like the ones domestic companies pay would be fair and reflect national sentiment. In response to this, Vice President Kevin Martin confirmed Korea belonged to one of the 25 countries that Facebook decided to report its sales to the local government, and that it would continue to faithfully comply with local tax laws. He also added that Facebook was aware of the issues Korea had raised regarding reverse discrimination and network fees, and that the company planned to actively cooperate with the Korean government, including the KCC, and abide by the regulations issued. Additionally, Vice President Kevin Martin explained that Facebook would focus on maximizing user satisfaction by investing the necessary financial and human resources in order to provide Korean users with the most advanced technology, security and reliability when logging into Facebook. He added that Facebook would cooperate with domestic ISPs and work to find a win-win solution in regard to the network fee. Chairman Lee expressed that considering the scale of Facebook’s profits in Korea, he hoped the company would fulfill its social responsibility as a global company and invest and support startups in Korea. He asked for Facebook to contribute to the development of Korea’s internet ecosystem. In response, Vice President Martin strongly emphasized that Korea, with its advanced ICT environment, is an important market for Facebook, and added that it would continuously contribute to Korea’s ICT industry and internet ecosystem. |
